Altering Popular Perception Since 1985

What if 9/11 was 50 VS. Wayne?

For all the people who might not know, I attend school in Jackson, MS.  On campus, I'm the "go-to girl" for Hip Hop debates and heated arguments about who's the best emcee or who had the best this or that.  The other day, I decided to chop it up with my fellow peers from New Orleans, LA.  You probably remember one of them from a previous video I posted at my "Kanye VS. 50" party.  Anyway, all three of them are really into Hip Hop.

We began to talk about the "hottest rapper in the game."  Not the best rapper, but the emcee with the most buzz. I placed my vote for Mr. West.  The reason being is because, his album is the biggest Hip Hop album in the country, where ever you turn he's there.  He's done like three world tours in the last two years and the album is at least 4.5 if not a classic (in my mind).  He made it to ABC's Nightline, people! He was on SNL... Excuse me, but that's major!

My peers didn't feel me. The guys began to explain to me why Weezy F. was the hottest rapper in the game.

Of course, that argument could have passed if this was prior to Sep. 11th.  I can't deny, that Wayne was huge prior to the dropping of "Graduation."  All they could say was, "He's on everybody's sh*t!"  Which is the same reasoning that the  I used prior to Sep. 11th argument .  Let's face it though.  Hip Hop isn't just the inner city streets throughout the U.S.  This culture is global.  Lil Wayne, ain't that dude in Moscow.  It's just not real.  Yes, he's hot in the streets, as well as underground, but has he really made a major IMPACT?  Think about it.  He hasn't displayed the "SUPERSTAR" personality yet.

I can't take anything away from the brotha, but he's not bigger than Kanye West.  Period.

So, the argument didn't end there.  They said, the only reason people bought Kanye's album was to go against 50 Cent.  They claim nobody wanted to see 50 win.  Ok, that's a valid argument, but I hit them back with this...if Wayne and 50 would have dropped the same day, would the people pick Wayne over 50?  The answer is NO.

They continued to say "Yes, the people would have.  A matter of fact, they would have picked Wayne over Kanye if they would have dropped on the same day."

Once again, I dazed into the parking lot, looking puzzled and thought, "What the hell happened to keeping it real?" I think the dudes, were so down to ride with Wayne, they lied.  Lol.  I like Wayne, 50 and Ye, but c'mon.  50 and Wayne on the same day? 50 would have killed it.  Just for the simple fact, 50 is a STAR and Wayne is just a tight rapper.

So, I had to put my money up...that Wayne will not and I repeat WILL NOT, push the numbers Kanye did in the first week.  He will barely hit 50's.  You wanna know why?  There's no anticipation.  He's flooding the streets with tracks, that people download.  Who pays to hear Lil' Wayne? Not many.  Nobody will rush to the store to get Lil Wayne on December whatever, unless he stops putting out tracks everyday.

Oh yeah, and branch off from his daddy and become the SUPERSTAR he needs to be...to be a  Jay-Z, Kanye, 50 or Pac.  You have to be your own man.

Shout to Wayne, I wish him the best of luck...maybe Jay and Wayne will come out the same day...or even Nas. The odds are against him.  Nobody cares if you can spit...they will download all the Papoose, Canibus and Lox sh*t they cane get their hands on...for FREE 99.  Wayne has to set up a relationship with the people to force them to buy...but why would I and he's dropping singles like raindrops?
