Memory Lane: The n*gga you love to hate

I'm on a bit of a hiatus at the moment since I, well, broke my arm in half.
It's tough to type much with only one hand, and staying awake and coherent is even more difficult with all the percocets...but Cube still makes it a good day.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

After some inspiration from seeing that classic Fight The Power video for the first time years in A.H.L.O.T.'s blog, I thought I'd start hitting y'all with some other old videos from the legends. Don't expect this on any sort of a regular basis cause I'm too damn busy...but I'll move on to some other folks for the next blog. Without further ado, one of my all-time favorites...Big Daddy Kane

What the fuck was Jay-Z thinking?

Hotdamn, two blogs in two days? Alert the authorities! That's 5 blogs now, watch out Meka...I'm coming for that ass (sorry I'm not homophobic enough to do that pause shit). Did y'all know this fool has almost 100 blogs now? Shit, and I thought Too $hort was prolific...he doesn't have shit on our superblogger.

But anyhow, last night was DX's owners birthday and we went out to some swank Hollywood restaurant and ate obscene amounts of food. Shortly after a big ass shot of Patron I started "writing" this blog in my head. That is always how I do shit, reviews, editorials or whatever...I write it in my head. Problem is I never get the ideas when I'm at my computer or even in a situation to type it on my MDA. So the shit I think of rarely ever gets done, because I'm too busy doing other shit when I make it back to my computer. The good thing is that when other people write shit that I wish I'd written, I just say I already thought of that shit and wrote it already...my mental notebook has got Nobel prizes bitch.

But I digress.

I'm sure y'all heard the original version of Jigga's subliminal Cam/Dame diss Dig A Hole, if you didn't get with the fuckin program. Check it HERE. This version of course, is a much doper Just Blaze beat and doesn't have that shitty ass singer squealing on the hook (and an extra Hov verse for good measure).

Sure Jay may just be the greatest emcee of all-time, but that doesn't mean he hasn't made his fair share of horrid songs. I mean shit, that Anything joint with Pharrell and Usher made me wanna use the disc to cut some coke then OD on it to end the misery. But when you've already got a song like that in the can, what makes you say "hey, maybe I should see a 130 pound rodent can make this song for me instead."?

Does Swizz have pictures of Jay putting his dick on Rhianna's big forehead or something? Dude hasn't made a good beat since the Ruff Ryders days unless it was, you know, just sampling Jay's voice. How the fuck did he manage to bump Just out? Who knows, but Jay lost on that one.

Remember when rappers sold records?

On the drive back to the hotel after Rock The Bells a couple weeks ago in NYC I picked up a copy of XXL's 10 year anniversary issue and started skimming through. In case you haven't read it, they did a little year by year recap; big artists of that year, big albums, etc. Of course, in 2000 it was Eminem who dominated the world. Do you remember what that album sold in the first week? 1.8 million.

One point eight fucking million records in a week!!

That shit isn't even fathomable these days. Shit, even the biggest cats are lucky to sell that many records, period. It ain't like people wasn't downloading back then either, napster was on every computer in the fucking world by that point.

There really isn't any point I'm making here, I guess its just really crazy to me that things have declined this quickly. I honestly don't think we'll ever see another rapper sell 500,000 albums in their first week.

50 Cent? Kanye? I don't think either will, even if they were dropping on the same day. And I'll tell you one thing, I think 50 is really fucking desperate right now. He's a smart dude, he knows the stakes. His ego sure as hell knows the stakes. 6 songs have leaked and no one - with the exception of the dickriders - has liked anything but I Get Money. Candy Shop may have been some bullshit, but it was some catchy bullshit that was a megahit. Amusement Park? That's just some bullshit. He is a cocky motherfucker but I really get the vibe behind the facade that he is worried about 'Ye and he is worried about doing human numbers this time around.

But back to the topic at hand (Snoop (c)), CD's are dead. Hip Hop? Ehh, that's debatable. CD's, yup, dead.

Personally, I say fuck real music. Let's just make 16 songs of tinny jingles, ig'nant choruses, dances, laffy's and taffys.

Oh wait, we're doing that already.
