The power of Hip hop culture is a dope but sometimes scary thing. Without a question it is easily the most influential sub-culture and proof of that can be seen everywhere from commercials, tv, hell we got the world wearing more loose fitting jeans (except for this skinny leg jean fad). But then theres the downside of it, when certain parts of it manage to become popular and starts to spread and then becomes its own staple in the culture when it shouldnt have been that popular in the first place.
The phrase is of course "No Homo" (and all its variations). This is a phrase I never used and hoped would have been dead and gone a long time ago, its something I thought was the most suspect phrase for a man to say anyway. The reason I say that is because according to people who use it, its basically a way to say "I just said some real gay shit but this covers it up so that you know I'm not gay". But having to say that just to justify your lack of homosexual intentions shows that you might have some homosexual thoughts since obviously the first thing you thought of was how suspect you sound after you said whatever you said.
I never understood why this phrase existed in the first place but then again it came from the same camp who wore pink and purple and had yall buying light pink tee's and powder pink fitted's. Point blank if youre not gay then either A: dont say gay shit or B: Dont say anything to makes people think twice about what you said. And chances are if you have to remind someone of what you are then most likely its not what you are.
I've heard every type of person say it from the immature high school kids (who in my mind have the only excuse to really say some stupid shit like this), thugs, college kids and grown men but the other day I heard a two women saying it... thats how I knew this shit was out of hand. Its to the point where I cant tell if our vocab/slang has turned into a bunch of gay phrases we cant escape or are people using these phrases as the green light to say gay shit?
Funny thing to me was, growing up hip hop artist had some of the most homosexual lines ive heard period but no one really questioned any of the rappers intentions. Example, DMX has probably said some of the suspect shit in hip hop history, things like "SUCK-MY-DICK, and to you niggas in jail before know its about to get thick" or "yall niggas remind me of a strip club cause everytime i come around its like I gotta get my dick sucked". And god rest his soul but Biggie's line saying "You look so good I suck on your daddy's dick, i never felt that way in life" might have easily taken the award as the most suspect thing ever said. But I dont think anyone then or now would question either one of those rappers.
Our culture has made some leaps and strides but 'No homo' is a step back. Maybe one of yall can explain to me why this phrase is needed cause I dont get it. We cant carry this shit or skinny jeans to 09, kill that shit now. I'll leave you with the words of Al Qaeda Jada "Real Men shouldnt have to say no homo"
