As much as I hate the 4th branch of the government (word to Immortal Technique) sometimes, I still find myself watching the news on a daily basis. 1) because it’s on when I come home from classes and don’t feel like doing shit else with myself, and 2) because to properly fight against something you don’t like, you have to know it well first. So as I was in my post-class vegetative state yesterday afternoon, munchin’ on my chicken wings and peach ice cream in true southern college student fashion, I had the sudden urge to throw something at my TV* because of the hypocrisy that was spewing from it. What’s worse is that this isn’t the first time I’ve been angry at the news for this issue.

In the past year or two, I’ve noticed a trend in the news media. When there’s not much else going on to talk about, they find some story about some new drug that’s out and all the kids seem to be doing all of a sudden. I’m pretty sure their intentions with this are for parents to find out about the drugs, and to know what to look for when their kids are using them, but I think it’s backfiring on them something terrible.

For starters, I didn’t know about any of the new drugs they talked about prior to hearing about them on the news. You could say that this means that the news is doing their jobs, or that I’m just late and not up on my information grind like I should be…but no. Truth is, not all kids are doing this shit. And anybody just like myself could turn on the news on any given day, not have known a damn thing about one of these drugs, and then suddenly be enlightened to a new high that to chase. Sometimes, like today’s featured youth drug of choice, the things they’re talking about are still legal to obtain and use.

Even worse in today’s instance of spreading the word about the new drug was the fact that they dropped information bombs about various sources where you could legally acquire it. For serious? You might as well run a 30 second ad when you cut to commercial breaks, giving 10% off to people who mention the ad when they hit up their e-pushers for the new “it”-drug.

There are just some things that are better off not being in a reporter’s stockpile of potential stories. The concept of legal drugs used by children is one of these things. It’s bad enough that the media wants to throw out biased, ridiculously skewed stories that they hope people will fall for. But it’s even worse when the rare instance of truth they speak is just an instructional piece on how to reach an elevated state without having to worry about catching a possession charge.

((If you’ll notice, I’m not naming any of said drugs because then I’d be doing the same thing that I’m complaining about the media doing. So don’t ask me what they are.))

*Don’t act like none of ya’ll ever wanted to throw something at a TV before. I know some of you are fans of The Sopranos. But don’t stop believing . I don’t care if they say a movie won’t happen. I mean shit, Sex and the City is doing one. It’s not over!
