BET Might Not Play Good Music

There used to be a point in time where the word “soundtrack” would evoke a specific image in my brain: an overly-air conditioned place with a big screen and floors that were probably so cluttered with old gum and popcorn pieces that you were glad it was too dark to see down there. These days I don’t connect the film industry with the word “soundtrack” as much as I used to though.

Apparently for some time now TV shows have been putting out soundtracks to their works of art, just as movies do. Forgive me for not knowing this has been going on for years, because up until recently I could have cared less about having some TV show soundtrack. So I never looked into the concept…big deal. I did now, though. The real point of this is why my interest was suddenly directed towards gaining some knowledge about soundtracks to TV shows.

Am I the only one that has noticed that as of late (and by late I do mean in the past year or two, not just last week or something) the quality of music on TV shows has increased in some sort of exponential fashion? Seriously…I even recall hearing The Roots on a show I never expected to hear any of their shit on a couple years back.

What’s the best part of the concept of decent music being used on TV shows? It’s giving a lot of otherwise low-key artists a lot of shine. I haven’t seen that happen so much in the rap sense of the word “music”, but especially with these alternative rock, weird folk-sounding artists. You know, like the song they played on that Grey's Anatomy episode when the bomb squad guy got blown up after he took the live ammo out of some guy's gut. Who the hell was Anna Nalick before that episode aired anyway? All of a sudden after that episode, you couldn’t escape her song. It got on the radio, it got on MTV. Thanks to that TV show, she solidified some (some? Who am I kidding, most of her) album and iTunes sales.

I’m willing to hypothesize that the realm of TV show soundtracks is going to turn into the newest promotional tool for artists on the come up. Forget myspace music hustlin’ (because let’s face it, there’s too many myspace artists for it to really work anymore) and just push to get your song played over some scene where someone gets shot/killed or where two (or more?) people are having some bomb ass sex. You know, the things we all remember from TV shows. But in all seriousness, when the song is right for the scene – damn if I don’t remember it. And I have gone out of my way to figure out who wrote (or should I say, performed? Fuckin’ ghostwriters) certain songs for shows before. So artists trying to make it out there – here’s a networking tip: make friends with the people who make the music decisions for the hot shows these days.
