Intelligence: The Gift and The Curse

     Intelligence is defined as the ability to THINK AND LEARN.

     Recently I found myself sitting alone. Not like I'm always in crazy crowds, I spend a lot of time by myself. I mean I truly felt ALONE. It's not like I couldn't have talked to somebody, and it's also not like people were ignoring me, yet things might as well have been that way. I don't know if people have noticed this, but sometimes I have a complex for being too complex. I get focused, concentrate...and bam, I find myself way over people’s heads somewhere in the clouds. This happens quite often. It's happened here, it happens at work, it's even happened when talking to my teachers at school. I have to admit, this leaves me a little nervous.

     See, anybody can read a book and remember some shit. That doesn't take much other than effort and a decent reading level depending on what your reading. Often I've seen people looked at as intelligent because they read some shit somebody else said, then can turn around and recite it. I'm not impressed. This doesn't make you intelligent; it makes you a dick rider. Nah, it doesn't make you a dick rider.... I'm just playing; it just means you can't form your own thoughts and opinions. Often I've seen people looked at as intelligent because they went and got some degree from some school. That doesn't make you intelligent; it just means you took the time to remember some shit long enough to score high enough on some tests to get that paper they gave you. Months after receiving that "oh so special" paper, ask this same person anything about the shit they learned and half of them can't tell you shit. Not saying you can't agree with other people’s opinions, or you shouldn't go to school, I'm just saying, don't get shit fucked up, that alone doesn't make you intelligent. No biggie, you don't have to be intelligent to make it in this country...I mean, look at the President, I'm pretty sure there are several intelligent people that will never make it as far as he has. This is a problem.

     America is truly the land of the free. We have all sorts of freedoms a lot of other places don't have. Freedom to be a fucking idiot, freedom to not think if you like, freedom to be an all around dumb ass. Sure, you could do these things anywhere, but where else could you do these things and live like you do here? Therein lies the problem, if you don't have to think, what motivates you to do so? Nothing, which is why so many don't. How else did Bush get in office? Who the fuck else would have bought a pet rock? If somebody said "Hey Bruce, I'll give you one million dollars a year for the next five years to not work a job," Chances are, I'd be unemployed. People are basically trained don't think, just do whatever your told, and you'll be fine. This is why people don't think, and this is also why those who do, often find themselves sitting by themselves. So I hear what you’re saying, I already know...."Brill, what the fuck does this have to do with hip hop?"

     The aforementioned problems are the main reason why hip hop (and really music in general) is in the state it's in. Before, muthafuckas focused on their lyrics, before, they brought knowledge. Now, that's not hot. Yea, you had your Biz Markies and shit before, but they weren't the majority. Even if you weren't rapping about nuclear fission, you had to at least be somewhat creative. Over time, artists started to get deeper, and then...it happened. SHINY SUIT MAN! It no longer had to be deep or even dope, it just had to be hot. Deep isn't hot. So now all of a sudden, artists are influenced not to think, due mainly to the fact their audience doesn't. The responsibility of any business is to give as many people as possible what they want. The responsibility of an artist is to be creative.  More rappers started becoming about their business, and less about the art. Once this happened, artist found themselves sitting by themselves. Artist found themselves "underground". If you rap about what's not hot, reading, being a better person, love (real love, whether it be good or bad, Common or Atmosphere), and other subjects that matter, and your no longer allowed to play with the other rappers, your thrown into the category of backpacker. You become the Yankee fitted over the head of the simple minded. This is bad, cuz once again, you're influenced not to think. Why think deeply when jotting down lyrics? it'll will separate you from everybody else, and nobody wants to be a loner right?

     The other day, I was talking to somebody at work. They said "Common is cool, I mean, when I listen to his lyrics, he's good. His lyrics are better than Kanye, but Kanye is a better rapper. I mean his swag..." I had to interrupt them. See, the thing is, a rapper is supposed to write raps. That's their job. How are the fuck are you gonna tell me, "His lyrics are good, but..." and then bring up something other than somebody else's lyrics? That's like a Laker hater telling me "Yea, Kobe is good, he's the best scorer in the league, and he's probably the best at stopping somebody from scoring at his position, but Joakim Noah has crazy swag, so he's better" GTFOH. This just goes to show how little people actually think. Rappers write raps, basketball players put the basketball in the hoop and stop others from doing so, and Xbox 360's break.....I had to toss that in there.....PEACE!
