Life is great! Chilling eating my Reese's peanut butter cups, watching Kobe go off, and burning more Xbox 360 games. The Atmosphere deluxe edition sitting on my living room table, GTA 4 either being burned for Xbox 360 by Friday, purchased for PS3 on Friday...but most likely both. Money in my pocket, money in my bank account, Fusion 5's in blue and black on the ground near my feet. Sure, things could be better. The Nissan Sentra could be a Hybrid Civic, the 40 inch LCD could be a 70, and the Lakers could be up by 50, but I've learned that sometimes you have to just enjoy what you have. What REALLY has me upbeat is the recently announced Rock the Bells lineup. While a lot of people will have their complaints about whose NOT there, or how they didn't get EVERY great artists to ever rip a mic to perform, to me, this is not only exactly what I predicted, it's also exactly what I wanted. Why?
5. No rock Fans
I loved having the chance to see Rage, however, i wasn't really big on the people they brought with them. I know, I know, being a black hip hop fan, I shouldn't get on any group of people, as I of all people should know how it feels to be bunched in with a group of people you don't fit in with because of stereotypes, but I really wasn't feeling some of these rock fans. The mosh pits, the fires, the overweight muthafuckas walking around with no shirt on. The last time I had a six pack was when I was 16 and drunk shit Mikes hard lemonade, and I know to keep my shirt on...you should too. Rock fans were damn near the majority of people at the show since Rage had only performed once prior to Rock the Bells in years, and that time was out in the middle of nowhere (Indio, CA). A lot of fans were just happy to see one of the dopest bands ever perform, and they chilled, shouted out the lyrics, and that was cool, it's good to see other people happy, but some of ya'll muthafuckas is too wild. I'm glad you won't be there.
4. Don't make me choose
Last year they made one of the most idiotic decisions at Rock the Bells. They added the Paid Dues festival to the show, but put them on a separate stage. While it's still not official all the acts announced for the show will perform on the same stage, seeing the number of acts, it seems as if they will. Good. Don't make me pick between MF Doom and the Roots....that's not cool. I wanna see everybody. Don't make me pick between Felt and Nas. I'll pick Felt all day every day, but I'd much rather just see both.
3. Don't sweat the Technique
One of my fondest memories of Rock the Bells was Immortal Technique's performance two years ago. Almost as dope as his music was his off the wall rants in between tracks. I'm not the biggest Immortal Tech fan, and I'm definitely not a fan of low quality albums. No matter how dope the lyrics are, if the shit sounds like it was recorded in the trunk of a moving 67 Chevy Nova, I have problems listening to it. Hearing dude live takes away all the problems I've had listening to him any other way. Having him AND Dead Prez...priceless.
2. Give the little guy a chance
Rock the Bells has done some major things. It brought Wu back together to perform (including ODB), they got Lauryn Hill to perform, they got Rage to perform, Supernatural broke the record for longest freestlye ever. I'm a simple dude.....I'm more excited to see Kidz in the Hall, Wale, and Jay Electronica. While I'm a huge Kidz in the Hall fan, I haven't really listened to Wale and Jay Electronica. I know there's been a lot of buzz about these cats, but I'm not too huge on new artists that are getting buzz online until they drop an album. Shit, I barely fuck with new artists period before they drop an album, as most of them never do. So I'm really hyped about seeing those three perform.
1. Tribe Called muthafuckin Quest
As much as I thought Slum Village, or Little Brother, or other acts would be the new Tribe, I've realized, there will NEVER be a new Tribe. The game has changed since Tribe was around. Hip hop heads now demand stronger lyrics than they did back then, meaning that to appeal to that audience, you have to take the lyrics above where Tribe had them. In doing this, a lot of artists lose track of some of the fun Tribe brought to the game. If an artist states he's bringing fun back to hip hop, his lyrics are normally uber whack, if they come hard with the lyrics, their often TOO serious. Tip and Phife brought that balance, that seems incredibly hard for everybody else to find. I've said several times that after, Wu, and Rage, I'd be happy if they super happy if they gave me Tribe...wish granted.
For those that don't know, the lineup is Rae and Ghost, Rakim, Nas,A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Pharcyde, Method Man and Redman, Mos Def, Immortal Technique, Dead Prez, Kidz in the Hall, Wale, Murs, Spank Rock, Santogold, Kid Sister, and Jay Electronica.
Los Angeles expect the show to be out in San Bernadino, and the date will be 08/09.
