"If I ain't better than Big.." Don't worry, you are by far

I guess the NBA Playoffs brings it outta everybody huh? Got everybody talking about who's the best, which albums are the best, who's not the best, which albums are trash. Well I've decided to join the debate. Before I do however, let me say something real quick, a little disclaimer if I may....

Disclaimer, Disclaimer:
Nobody is truly a  better rapper. There's no definate proof or evidence. This is all opinion. While I may think he sucks, you may swear Kaine of the Ying Yang twins is the dopest of all time. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion...my opinion just happens to be the best....let's go

"Now it's time to rewind,to remind ,em why I'm, in the position that I am"
Jay-Z "Hovi Baby"

Ok, so I've been looking at the other blogs on here, you know, checking em out, checking the comments out. On Sy's (check him out if you haven't already) "2pac is the most overrated rapper" blog, I noticed alot of people had Biggie as the best rapper ever. While I agree that Tupac isn't the best ever, and disagree that he's the most overrated rapper,...Biggie as the best ever?  I'm not suprised people feel this way, it's a pretty popular opinion, however I don't understand how people come to this conclusion. When Biggie was alive I never really felt him. Don't try and say I have a West Coast bias, because I thought "Illmatic" was a classic, and "It Was Written" was dope. After he passed I heard some album cuts off "Life after Death", and I tried that out. It was cool. When people try to tell me he's the best ever though...I'd be like "hell no, that album wasn't that tight,". In response they bring up "Ready to Die" like it's the holy grail of hip hop. I've never listened to "Ready to Die" all the way through until yesterday.

"WOW"
Flavor Flav "Flavor of Love"

This is what everybody is ranting and raving about? This is what everybody defines as classic? Wow. Come on fam, come on. This album is not that tight. While I wouldn't say it's whack...then again..I don't know, I definately wouldn't say it's dope. There's like 3 good songs, and three cool songs. "Unbeleivable" "Suicidal Thougths" and "Everyday Struggle' seemed good...at the moment. Maybe I'm just trying to make an argument for him because I see none. I'll say those songs were good. The singles of the album "Juicy" "Big Poppa" and "One more chance" were cool too. Everything else was whack, or incredibly forgetable. It was a fight to resist the urge to go throw something else on while listening to this album. Are you people serious?? How is this guy the best ever? There are several rappers I'd put above Biggie, I wrote a list, wanna hear it, here it go: Jay Z, Nas, Tupac, Eminem, Common, Krs 1, Rakim, LL Cool J....and the list could go on if I thought about it more. I mean, to me, Biggies strength is his ability to make a popular song, without it being whack. Biggies singles were some of the best, and they were extremely popular, however, his ability to make a good single alone doesn't place him at the top. I mean, listen to Game's "The Documentary"....50 cent can make a good song, but that doesn't place him at the top. (oh I kill myself)..so who is.....

"S. Carter, ghost writer....and for the right price, I can even make yo shit tighter"
Jay-Z "Ride or Die"

"That's RIgHT"
Young Jeezy "Every god damn song he's ever done"

No, not Jeezy, that was just me putting emphasis on my choice. Jay Z. Like I said, I got alot of people beteter than Big, but to cut this blog down, and refrain from taking the rest of the letters off my keyboard(If you don't know how to type, you can't use my keyboard, you can 't see the n, the m, the l, or the a, and s. luckily, I know how to type)I'm gonna use Jay-Z, cuz I have him as the best rapper ever. First of all, to be the best rapper, to me, you have to have been good enough at making songs to get the mainstream's attention. Real hip hop heads don't know shit about rappers, we know emcees, but when everyone else talks about them, they call them rappers. This makes the argument for who's the best rapper alot easier, because I'd put Murs over most, damn near all emcees,(including some of the best rappers) but since were only talking about rappers, I don't have to include Murs or others like him. Anywayz, screw all that, that's a whole different blog, this blog is about Jay Z being better than Big. To me, there's no comparison. I've been through this argument a million times. Originally, I'd just say that Jay was able to mature and talk about shit Big never got a chance to, because I never heard "Ready to Die". I acknowledged that maybe on his first two albums Big was better, because I didn't know what he had on "Ready to Die". Now that I've heard that "so-called classic" this shit is a no brainer. Big wasn't better than Jay Z in any way shape or form. I'm gonna start this off simple though.

On their first two albums, Jay and Big covered basically the same stuff, drugs, money, the hood, women, guns, whatever, whatever. If you listen to the albums though, Jay covered every one of these issues better than Big.

"You know in more than one way cocaine numbs the brain, all I thought about before, is how the funds once came"
Jay-Z "You Must Love Me"

Biggie never covered selling drugs like that. Biggie's never said anything as true as that period. Biggies crack rock/jumpshot line was a stereotype that he helped to reinforce (which is evident by Ja Rule bringing it back up to a reporter on "Backstage") Anybody who's ever been in that situation or seen someone in that situation (selling drugs) can relate. When I first heard that line, I was around alot of people out there like that, and I was like "Damn, that's real shit" To me, biggie has no moments as deep as that. I mean, sure, Biggie, has made some statements, but he's basic. If that's the case, who shouldn't be named the GOAT.

Jay and Big are both from Brooklyn, differnt parts, but Jay takes you there. When I heard "Where I'm from" I felt like I was sitting on a bench, with the Marcy buildings towering over me. That was one of the good things about Illmatic, it put you there. Hip Hop is often called the hoods CNN, tracks like "One Love" put you in QB. To a certain extent all hoods are the same, but Nas gave you the familiar hood feel, with a New York twist to it. That's what "Where I'm From" does. It gives you that familiar hood feel, with a New York feel to it.

"Girls.. from the projects wouldnt' fuck us, say we talk to much, so they ran up to Tompkins, sought them dudes to trust, I don't know what the fuck they thought, them niggas foul just like us"
Jay-Z "Where I'm From"

"I can't fuck with no Long Beach nigga, ya'll doggs, I need me a good LA man"
-random chicken head

Yet at the same time on that track, he gives you some shit on that track that's New York

"From where they pull ya card, and argue all day about, who's the best emcees, Biggie, Jay-Z, and Nas"

Out west, we aren't concerned with shit like that. I mean sure, the heads (hip hop heads like myself) would argue about things like that, but the average ghetto dude??That's gotta be some New York shit. Biggie doesn't give me that feel. Biggie didn't cover the hood as deep as Jay, Biggie was far to basic to be the best.

When I think about it, Biggie didn't have the concepts Jay had in the first two albums. Jay had "Rap Game/Crack Game" Jay had "22 2's" (which he started with "2 much West Coast dick lickin", you can't say I have a bias). How can you possible say Biggie is better than Jay? Oh, Ok, I know what your gonna say.....

I already know what your gonna say, so prior to you saying it, I'll bring it up. Jay took Big's style....get the fuck outta here. I heard Jay before, I know he used to rhyme fast. I don't know if you think that he started rhyming slower the first time he met Big, but I know that's not Big's style. It's not Big's style to "not rhyme fast", it's damn near every ones style to "not rhyme fast". So if you think that was Jay taking Big's style, you need to think a little harder than that. If you compare Jay to anyone, I'd compare him to Big Daddy Kane, I haven't even heard that much of Kane, (I'm gonna listen to more soon, probably tonight) but from what I've heard it's obvious he's main influence is Kane. I also know, that Kane showed Jay hella love originally, so that's probably where the style change came from.

The biggest knock on Jay is...as Killa Stanron put it, the "Swagger Jacking". Ok, first of all, when you hear a line from someone else in Jay's rhymes, you know where it came from. I think you have things mixed up. When "Rappers Delight" came out, anybody outside of NY would've thought that the dudes who performed that song came up with it. They didn't. That's biting. Kanye and "Jesus Walks"..that's biting. I don't know if you know this, but originally, Rhymefest wrote some of the verses for "Jesus Walks" in one of his songs. Kanye heard it, and asked to put it into his song. Nobody heard the song Kanye got the verse from before Kanye came with it. That's "politely" biting. When Jay uses someone else's rhymes you know exactly where it comes from. When Jay did "Bonnie and Clyde" you know that came from Pac. On top of that, with the exception of "Bonnie and Clyde", all the times Jay has used someone else's lines, they could've easily been replaced without really effecting the song.  Jay says when he uses other peoples lines, he's showing respect to people he has respect for. If the lines can be replaced (with the exception of Bonnie and Clyde, which was obviously an attempt to get support from Pac fans) what is the purpose of using the lines? He gains nothing from using them...it has to be for the reason he listed. I don't view that as the same thing as biting. "Bonnie and Clyde" was the only time you can say he could've been trying to use someone else's material to better himself. However, when other peoples use his stuff, it's IS to their benefit. No one mentions this. When Cassidy (sorry SY, had to bring him up once)"I'm a Hustler" was a playing everywhere, it was because of the Jay sample. Does anybody Cassidy's lyrics to that song?  Actually, I do remember some lyrics from that song, "He made it a hot line, I made it a hot song" that sounds familiar...where have I heard that before. Jay's lines have been used more than Jay has used other peoples lines. When people use Jay's lines, it's normally the best line in their song, and normally used to benefit the person using it. I view this as way worse, but it's never mentioned. Why??  It's not an attack on Jay Z, that's why. Everyday is "Hate Jay Day" I think this part of the argument is dead, in fact, I think this argument is dead, it's obvious, Jay is by far better than Big. I'm done.

Don't let me talk about current day Jay. Jay Z is better than Big in all ways. "Meet the Parents" was a better story than "Warning". "Squeeze First" was a better freestyle lyrical song than "Unbeleivable". Shit, Jay's lyrics are better, he's deeper, he's has better and more concepts, he has a more varied subject matter. Biggie has no "Beach Chair", Biggie has no "Song Cry", Let's be real. If you disagree, help me, cuz I just don't know what the hell people are talking about.

Oh yea, one more thing. I know alot of you are holding grudges against Jay because some of your heroes aren't getting shine on Def Jam, however remember Jay is dealing with them from a buisness stand point, and, he's not the main dude at Def Jam. If you read my last article, you seen I said, labels are putting up less money to support rap artists because they're not getting they're money back. Don't blame Jay your favorite artists won't make Def Jam money. At the same time, Jay's buisness tactics have nothing to do with him emceeing prowess.  Stop being a damn Jaytheist.

Let's run this back, I said Jay was better than Big. I also said Jay was number 1 period, but the my main point was Jay was better than Big. I also said, Pac, Nas, Em, Krs, LL, Rakim, and Common were all better than Big. I have no order for those other guys, but I have Jay at #1 definately. Don't agree? Speak no or forever hold your cot damn mouth shut. I'm out..credits.

Go out and support real shit, get that Rhymefest "Blue Collar" it's definately dope.
