RIP Errbody

So while laughing at the comments made by some of my readers I noticed somewhere else that coming up is the anniversary of the death of a pretty popular person. First of all….when did we start celebrating death? Pretty fucked up huh? Well, for those that don’t know, September 13 is the anniversary of 2pac’s death, but before I shed a tear……

“Man, Killing some whack shit”
-Kanye West “Everything I Am”

It’s me again. You know, the person who said 2pac was better than Big (along with a list of other rappers)The same dude who started talking shit when other bloggers said 2pac wasn’t that good. Well, as the celebration of 2pac’s life (sounds better than the anniversary of his death doesn’t it?) nears, I felt it only right I share my thoughts.  2pac has definitely left us with some of the greatest songs in hip hop history. It can’t be argued that there aren’t many songs in the history of hip hop, or music period as good as “Dear Momma”, “Keep Your Head Up”, or “Brenda’s got a Baby”. (Or my personal favorite, “So Many Tearz”). We could argue all day about his influence, negative or positive. Everybody has taken something of their own from Pac. Me personally, I admit that my standing behind my beliefs, no matter how popular or unpopular they are, is partially derived from Pac, and I believe that’s a good thing. It’s quite obvious however by looking at the comments left by many a 2pac fan, that everyone influenced by his life wasn’t influenced in a positive way. Many people have hung on to certain things he said, which weren’t in the best interest of our communities (or at least not in the way people are interpreting them), and are living and breathing by them (or at least that’s what they’ll have you believe when they talk shit online). No matter how you look at it, like Ras Kass said, several of today’s rappers owe 2pac and the Outlawz most of their publishing. I don’t believe he’s part of the ruining of hip hop as Saul Williams (Micheal K “Omar” Williams brother, you know, the weird ass poet) or a certain hip hop legend (I can’t remember who said it) believe, but I do believe that his influence has been both good and bad on hip hop. (You can’t blame him for it, some people are just idiots)

We could argue all day about how “REAL” 2pac was, how revolutionary he was, how deep he was, how whack he was, how much of a fake thug he was (If “Queens Reigns Supreme” is true, some people will feel hella let down), and how shallow some of his songs were (“Whats your Phone #”…yea), we can’t argue the fact that he’s gone. While some would love to talk about what he was GOING TO DO, none of that matters. I’ve heard people compare him to Malcolm X at the same age, I’ve heard people say he was gonna be a leader to help our communities get their shit together...none of that matters. 2pac is another cat who died too young and didn’t get a chance to do all that he could have.  With that being said, we have to realize……..

DEATH is DEATH

Speculation is pointless. If Lauryn Hill had died soon after “The Miseducation…” we’d be talking forever about how she was gonna influence millions of young black females to grow up and be strong black women…but look at Lauryn now. Too much emphasis is put on people’s celebrity status when they die. We make too big of a deal when celebrities pass. People die every day. You can say what this one did, or you can say how many records this one sold, but when someone dies at a young age, you never know WHAT THEY COULD HAVE DONE. I feel just as bad for the family of the random 24 year old that get’s murdered in my hood as I do for Afeni Shakur. While Pac may have sold millions of records, the dude on my block could have been anything, positive or negative…while 2pac could have turned into anything, positive or negative.  In fact, I feel worse for the family of the dude on my block, because he may not have seen the highs of life 2pac was able to see. Sometimes I get caught in this shit too. The other day my friend told me the guy who played Slim Charles on “The Wire” had got killed. I was like “damn…that’s fucked up, I heard dude was a musical artists too, it’s like you can’t even try and do shit with your life anymore”. As my friend continued to read what he was reading, he noticed he misread it and said “oh wait, he didn’t die, his brother did, he (the guy who plays Slim Charles) was trying to keep his brother from getting shot” I started to say, oh, cool…then I realized, that some fucked up shit. Death is death. Forgive me for not crying on the 13th. Forgive me for telling someone in a battle years back “battling me, you must be insane, your career will crash and burn just like Aaliyah’s plane” or “Don’t come at me with no bullshit, I’m liable to flip faster than Left Eye’s whip”. It’s not that I don’t care that these people passed, it’s just that the huge festivities put together for celebrities when they pass has become somewhat upsetting to me. If “MarkTwainFame” dies tomorrow, there will be no update on Hiphopdx. If I get shot tonight, they’ll be no breaking CNN story. If “The Original Drea” get’s hit with a stray bullet in the head, none of us will even know, but all of our lives are just as important as any diamond selling artists. Call it envy if you like, but while some are crying Thursday for 2pac and his moms, I’ll be playing “Skate” and watching ESPN, cuz If I die Friday, Afeni Shakur wont’ cry for me.
