The Best Kept Secret

Hip Hop is Changing Lanes

This is my first time ever doing a blog here on Dx, but if you haven’t heard of me, its Legend, the mixtape DJ you might catch in the mixtapes section. Or ... MySpace. I represent the Golden Era in hip-hop. The Era everyone’s been trying to chase ever since we left it. You don’t catch me saying much, but when I do speak … it’s for definite reason.

So as I sat and listened to Graduation, I realized we're experiencing another turning point in hip hop (love it or hate it, I might just have a point).

Let me explain ...

As the South has dominated hip-hop the past couple years, it seems that as for the past couple months we’ve seen a decline in their presence and a rise in the bubbling East Coast and Midwest. The truth is, that people are changing gears on hip-hop. They don’t want to hear that ‘Ay Bay Bay’ shit anymore. They don’t want albums with 4 nice tracks and garbage for the rest. They want complete albums. Not to discredit any artist, but were seeing this shift in hip-hop happen before our own very eyes. Just last week Talib outsold Swizz Beats in sales. (And we all know the difference in their music). Common just dropped another solid album which charted number 1 in its respected week. And Kanye, has definitely solidified himself with Graduation as his best album yet. (I might even venture to say I like it better than Commons album). 5 Mics? No, but it certainly deserves a 4.75. And as we watch sales stay on the decline, people are going out and supporting these artists. (Yeah I know, not in record numbers like before, but people are definitely showing support).

As far as hip-hop battles, Kanye West transcends and reaches out to more people than 50 Cent can. His range of artistic spectrum is a lot bigger than 50’s. Stronger not only appeals to your hip-hop fan, but it applies to that mom going through cancer as an uplifting song that keeps her motivated she’ll make it through the day. You always hear of people saying a certain song or movie got them through certain situations. And if you think about it…single by single, Kanye is attacking all angles.

Can't Tell Me Nothing (street anthem)
Stronger (MTV crowd + more)
The Good Life (MTV crowd + club crowd)
Bittersweet (MTV crowd + more) [OHH ... ya'll forgot about that one didn't you?]

Bittersweet is still to be released. I see Def Jam packaging it as a fourth single in the Graduation (Deluxe Edition with Bonus Tracks & DVD). I wouldn’t doubt that one bit. And that just goes to show the genius behind the marketing plan for Kanye’s album.

So let’s bring it back to the hip-hop side of things. Kanye is only one artist I’ve mentioned today. I haven’t even started on others who have put out quality music the past few months. (Marco Polo’s Port Authority, Pharoahe Monch Desire and Joell Ortiz The Brick Bodega Chronicles) as well as a variety of mixtapes (Skyzoo’s Corner Store Classic, Ransom Best In the City 2, Termanology Hood Politics IV…to mention a few) and upcoming projects (Saigon, Royce 5’9, 9th Wonder's Dream Merchant, Little Brother's GetBack Bishop Lamont’s CALTroit, Cormega, Stat Quo, Papoose) as well a slur of new mixtapes (from the likes of Immortal Technique, Stimuli, Torae, Esso, Chaudon and AC)...

I'd say hip hop is very much well on a comeback.

Let the debate being.

Ps. As far as me, I’m working on a few projects as of late. Got a tape dropping with Dub Floyd and Vega Benetton. I’m working on a tape with the boy Stimuli, my dude Godchildis on his GRIZZLY ... (shouts to Godsun), and shouts to pretty much everyone who is supporting hip hop. REAL music is still alive and kicking, you just gotta do the digging, to give ya ears what they itchin.

Remember that ...
