Van Hunt: A Wet Dream Deferred

April 12th, 2008 | Author: DeMarco Williams

DX: What else do you love?
VH:
I love horses. I don’t wanna ride them. I just think they’re beautiful animals. I’d be the one who had a ranch with horses just running around. And I ain’t never seen a horse! Also, man, I love boxing. I’m a big boxing fan. You know what? I think people are smart about it, as far as like these big money fights with Mayweather/De La Hoya and Mayweather/Hatton. Those are what I call “pop idol” fights. It’ll pull up the rear of the boxing game and bring up the upcoming talent. Also, like Emmanuel Stewart also said, they need to go back and invest in these kids, these amateurs, to get a strong team back into the Olympics.

DX: Tell me three performers, alive or dead, that you would have at your dream concert.
VH: Malcolm X
, any top cellist's performance of the Bach cello suites, and The Nicholas Brothers.

DX: You’ve mentioned Bach twice. What do you find most interesting about the classical sound?
VH:
If it weren't the basis for all modern music, you could limit it to a "sound" or category-as I assume you mean. What I find most interesting about it is that after centuries upon centuries of its developed mastery, we modern musicians haven't found a way to improve upon these compositions or even move away from them vertically or laterally. We have only taken small parts of them and denigrated them beyond recognition and in most cases beneath the definition of music.

DX: Define the typical Van Hunt fan.
VH:
Most of them are sophisticated, educated, articulate, literate. However you want to say it. They’re fun-loving and sincere. Those are the adjectives that I’d use. But most importantly, they’re diverse.

DX: Speaking of diversity, are there any guys at the show?
VH:
Yeah, because they’re chasing the girls. It’s so many girls there, so guys come for them. Most of the dudes that show up are generally musicians. They got their arms folded, leaning against the wall.

DX: You’ve seen the good and bad of the industry. What characteristic does an inspiring artist need to have to succeed?
VH:
I would say integrity. Randy would get on me because Randy would say the first thing that you need is some songs! Integrity and talent would help.

DX: What do you hope to accomplish, career-wise, in the next 12 months?
VH:
Hopefully, I’ll have two albums out. I’d get that book of short stories out. I’d like to write another book. I’d just like to continue enjoying the privilege of parenting. That’s about it.

DX: How many children do you have?
VH:
Just one. I’m trying to make him my masterpiece. He’s five.

DX: Anything else you wanna clear up for fans?
VH:
Nah, I think it’ll all come out. Just come check out the shows. Now that I’ll be releasing some records without somebody hovering over me, I think they’ll see all of me in these records. It won’t be such an intense affair.
