The Fast And The Furious

July 9th, 2001 | DVD Release | Author:

This loud and fast street racing movie, directed by Rob Cohen (The Skulls, Dragonheart), concerns LAPD detective Brian O'Connor (Walker) who goes undercover to infiltrate the world of underground street racing. O'Connor's loyalties become split when he befriends a racing team's leader Dominic (Diesel) and falls for Dominic's sister Mia (Jordana Brewster).

The movie is basically a lot of cars and a lot of noise with very little plot. Also Paul Walker's Southern Cal surfer accent is an almost flawless impersonation of Keanu Reeves which is quite weird since the plot of The Fast And The Furious mimics Keanu's Point Break. You almost expect to hear Detective O'Connor say "Whoa!" That being said, the plot is thin and character development amounts to characters taking the lead character aside and telling him how they fell in love with cars. The director tries to pull off some plot twists but the pacing of the film renders these events unsurprising. What is left is a movie who's success will be determined by the target audience it was aimed at: the young male audience; with all the flashy cars which will assure box office success.

All in all on its surface The Fast And The Furious is full of cars, muscle and noise, but underneath it all not much else.
