Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker reteam as Inspector Li and Detective Carter in this action comedy sequel to the original smash hit form 1998. Jackie Chan, argueably the world's biggest action star, doles out the action and Chris Tucker, Hollywood's newest $20 million dollar superstar, doles out the laughs in what is surprisingly a superior movie than the original.
Rush Hour 2 starts right where part 1 ended with Carter going with Li to Hong Kong on vacation. Inspector Li and Detective Carter get caught up with an international counterfitting operation led by crime lord Ricky Tan, of whom Li has a past history with. What makes this movie far better that the original aside form the more elaborite action set pieces is the surprisingly well played character development of Li and Carter. Elements touched upon in the original are expanded here giving the audinece a comfortable familiarity with the two characters.
Partly filmed in Jackie's old stomping grounds of Hong Kong (think of it as a sports team that gets to play at home after a long road trip) Jackie gets to play for the home crowd and gets to pull off some bigger fight sequences than the original. Chan is probably working with crew he has worked with for years and that familiarity gives this film great action sequences.
Jackie Chan does most of the action while Chris Tucker does most of the talking for both of them (and then some). If Tucker was paid a dollar a word he easily would have made $20 million. Whereas Chan gets most of the action, Tucker gets most of the laughs as the loud mouth Detective Carter. Tucker is the type of actor you either like or hate due to his 100 mph speech but better way to talk in a fast paced action movie.
All in all, Rush Hour 2 has a better story, bigger action, and funnier laughs than the original and is argueably the best of the summer blockbuster movies out in theatres right now. It has great action and great lauughs throughout. Li and Carter have become the Riggs and Murtaugh of the new millienium; Chan fights like a lethal weapon and Tucker talks like one. Not bad for a guy who started out smoking weed on the stoop of his friend's house on a Friday.![]()
