Flavor of Love had its run as one of the most watched reality TV shows ever. The show had many criticisms, some say it degraded and disrespected women, as Flavor Flav was portrayed as childish man trying to ease up on some women. Even many of the shows contestants were accused of being a bunch of gold diggers, ghetto, not lady-like, labeled as women with ulterior motives. True or not, the formula worked, even the women who did not take Flav's hand, graced magazine covers and were offered shows of their own.
Shay Johnson better known as Buckeey spoke to HipHopDX to let it be known of what went down. The alum opens up about her then-competition, her true feelings for Flavor Flav, and post-show sex-tape and allegations that she leaked it. After some Charm School, this self-proclaimed role-model says she's on the greener pastures, read why.
HipHopDX: Now that your in the limelight how you feel about all this publicity you’ve been getting. Whether positive or negative?
Buckeey: What do you mean? Because I’ve been getting a lot of publicity off of Flavor of Love. I would say that I have more now I would say that. I would say the publicity is good, where it comes from I got a different feeling about that. More people notice me, wanna be around me. I’ve been getting booked for events so it has it pros and it’s cons.
DX: That’s what I meant by publicity from living a normal life to getting all this exposure on TV and everything...
Buckeey: Of course, it’s different. It would be different for anybody, but I just try to stay humble about the situation. I don’t want to run around like I’m the queen. No, I’m not like that. Of course people see me on TV and admire me more. I appreciate that I’m having the time of my life.
DX: Was reality television something you always wanted to do?
Buckeey: I always wanted to be on television. It was more so acting of what I wanted to do. When the reality show opportunity came, I was like, "Why not, we’ll see what happens." I didn’t go on the show with the intentions of falling in love with anybody, no! I went on the show, meet Flav, as he was a great guy. We would only be friends, that’s it.
DX: Did you always look at this as an opportunity to get to the next level?
Buckeey: I didn’t know what would happen, I knew that it would open up doors. I didn’t think it would do what it did, because I didn’t see Flavor of Love 1. Honestly out of all three seasons, our season was the best season. I’m so happy I was on that show at that time. I’m glad I wasn’t on Flavor of Love 3.
DX: [Laughs], so what it was like running around in a mansion with Flav, how was the experience?
Buckeey: The pros about it was dealing with Flav. He’s just easy, fun, he didn’t force you to do anything. He’s not tryna have sex with you , he’s nothing like that. It was just fun and to be on it was like being on vacation on. The cons was challenging as you can see with the incident at the balcony. I survived the environment, I was there long enough, had my time, and that was it.
DX: You just said Flav wasn’t trying to have sex with nobody, but was he with the other girls?
Buckeey: I wasn’t in the room so I don’t know, I can’t speak on they behalf. As far as what they [other women on show] told me, I know he slept with two other people. Of course everybody knows New York is one of them. The second person I’m not gonna mention, because it not my business to mention that. I don’t think it benefits me to get in other people’s business. If they had sex they did, it has nothing to do with me.
DX: They are human so they did what they do...
Buckeey: Exactly, they grown they do what they wanna do. I ain’t got nothing to do with that.
DX: How you feel about New York, a lot of people said she over-exaggerated on the show. Do you agree?
Buckeey: [Laughs], When the tape starts rolling, she knows how to play her position well. I will say that, she was entertaining to me. I didn’t hate the girl, I don’t got nothing against her. I don’t got nothing against nobody on the show. It’s just when you step to me wrong, I gotta handle that. Outside of that, I thought she was funny. I don’t have a problem with her it ain’t that serious.
DX: What it was like watching the final episode when Flav had to pick between her and Delicious. When she didn’t get picked how you felt about that?
Buckeey: I already knew [laughs], I already knew the outcome of the show. It looked like she was hurt and I don’t think it’s cool for nobody to have their feelings hurt, it’s not a good thing. Getting hurt by a guy, girl, or whoever, it’s not a good feeling at all. I never had a grudge against her; I honestly felt sorry for the girl, but she got her show out of that too. She’s doing the damn thing right now. Continued on page 2 »
