In a Facebook message uploaded over the weekend, New York musician Mykki Blanco revealed to his fans that he’s HIV positive. He explained that he’s been HIV positive since 2011, which he says is the length of his entire music career.

“Ive been HIV Positive since 2011, my entire career,” Mykki Blanco wrote on June 12. “fuck stigma and hiding in the dark, this is my real life. I’m healthy I’ve toured the world 3 times but ive been living in the dark, its time to actually be as punk as i say I am.”

In a comment to his original post, Blanco explained that the music industry likely won’t be as welcoming to his reveal. He also expressed interest in making the transition into the art world.

“the music industry ain’t gonna like i admitted this so if a curator could help me move more into the art world that would be awesome,” he wrote.

In addition to making the reveal to his Facebook fans, Blanco also sent out a message on Twitter about living his truth.

“you take care of YOUR people by living YOUR truth,” Mykki Blanco said in a tweet sent yesterday (June 13).
